SoCal SOPHE is excited to announce a new pilot program to prepare emerging public health professionals for successful, impactful careers while strengthening the future of the field.
SoCal SOPHE’s Horizons Mentoring Program will match mentees with seasoned public health professionals to learn about the public health field, develop skills and receive guidance.
Program Purpose:
To prepare emerging public health professionals for successful, impactful careers while strengthening the future of the field.
Program Goals:
- Develop Emerging Public Health Leaders
Support the professional growth of emerging public health professionals through mentorship, guidance, and skill development.
- Strengthen Workforce Readiness
Equip mentees with the knowledge, leadership skills, and professional competencies needed for successful and impactful careers in public health.
- Build Strong Professional Networks
Foster meaningful connections between experienced public health professionals and emerging leaders to strengthen the future of the field.
Who is the program for?
- Mentees: Current undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in health sciences, public health, health education, or a related field, as well as individuals who have graduated within the past year.
- Mentors: Public health professionals with five or more years of experience in the field interested in empowering the next generation of leaders in public health and health education
Program Requirements:
- Mentors and mentees must be active SoCal SOPHE members
- Mentors and mentees must attend a brief 60 minute virtual orientation prior to the start of the program
- Mentors and mentees must agree to meet virtually for at least 60 minutes once per month at a mutually convenient time (Option to meet more often by mutual agreement)
- Mentors and mentees are encouraged to attend SoCal SOPHE events, including networking socials, continuing education trainings, and volunteer events whenever possible
What is the duration of the program?
- Application opens on June 1, 2026
- Applications close on July 31, 2026
- Mentorship Program runs from September – May
